BOMA International to Host Students and Veterans at Career Day

June 21, 2013

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(WASHINGTON—June 21, 2013) The Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) International will be hosting more than 50 students, instructors and veterans at a special Career Day on Monday, June 24, 2013, at the 2013 Every Building Conference & Expo in San Diego.  The events scheduled for Career Day will provide college students and veterans transitioning out of military service with valuable insight into potential careers in commercial real estate.

Career Day began four years ago as Student Day, when BOMA International invited college students from various real estate programs to attend BOMA’s annual conference to learn about career opportunities in commercial real estate.  This year, BOMA has expanded the scope of the event by partnering with the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) to also host veterans returning from the wars in the Middle East who are considering careers in the industry.

Participants will be assigned a mentor to accompany them throughout the day, making introductions to industry practitioners, answering questions and providing guidance.  The schedule of events for Career Day includes educational sessions, a hands-on commercial building tour and a networking event.

“BOMA International is pleased to welcome our heroes from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to our annual conference this year,” commented BOMA International Chair Joe Markling, managing director of Strategic Accounts with CBRE.  “Military experience translates well into commercial real estate careers, as our veterans bring to the table leadership and teamwork experience, technical skills and the ability to work well under pressure—all attributes valuable in our industry.  Through Career Day, BOMA hopes to guide the next generation of property professionals—both students and veterans—into meaningful and fulfilling careers in commercial real estate.”
