BOMA International Honors Outstanding Members at Annual Conference

July 10, 2013

(WASHINGTON – July 10, 2013) The Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) International honored four of its members with the Regional Member of the Year Award during the 2013 Every Building Conference & Expo, held June 23-26 in San Diego.  Regional Member of the Year Awards are given annually to BOMA members who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment and contribution to the association and to the real estate industry.
The recipients honored at this year’s annual conference were:
Don Dwiggins (In Memoriam), BOMA/Anchorage
BOMA Pacific Northwest Region Member of the Year
BOMA/Anchorage and the commercial real estate industry lost a dear friend when Don Dwiggins passed away earlier this year.  Dwiggins was a building owner and managed his own portfolio.  A member of BOMA/Anchorage for more than 20 years, he held multiple leadership positions within the local association, including President from 1997 to 1998 and Treasurer from 2001 to 2013.  He was known as the “Question Man” at monthly luncheons for always asking demanding but relevant questions of the speakers and presenters.  Dwiggins was active on several BOMA/Anchorage committees, including Advocacy/Legislation, Finance, Education and Membership.  He was critical on land use issues and helped to create balance for property rights.  His participation, energy and passion contributed immensely to the success of BOMA/Anchorage.
Susan E. Engstrom, RPA, FMA, BOMA/Greater Phoenix
BOMA Pacific Southwest Region Member of the Year
Susan Engstrom has been an active and influential member of BOMA/Greater Phoenix since 1994, serving either on the Board of Directors or as an officer from 1998 through 2013. Engstrom played a vital role in the progress that BOMA/Greater Phoenix has made in education, planning and governance in the past decade.  Her leadership, foresight and support have also driven a vibrant Young Professionals Group.  She also has been the backbone of BOMA’s advocacy efforts for years, serving as Chair of the local Government Affairs Committee for three terms and currently serving as Chair of the BOMA International’s Government Affairs Committee.
Ro Sipek, RPA, BOMA/Austin
BOMA Southwest Region Member of the Year
Ro Sipek has been a dedicated member and leader of BOMA/Austin for more than 15 years.  She served as BOMA/Austin President and as a Board Member of Texas BOMA in 2012.  As the current Chair of the Leadership and Development Committee, Sipek plays a key role in identifying and mentoring future BOMA/Austin leaders and prioritizes reaching out to young professionals to integrate them into all aspects of BOMA.  Her financial acumen has helped strengthen the long-term and financial health of the BOMA/Austin, and she is an active and long-time participant in Advocacy Days, taking commercial real estate’s message directly to state and local legislators.

Lynn S. Vilmar, RPA, BOMA/Greater Tampa Bay
Southern Region Member of the Year
Lynn Vilmar has been a member of BOMA/Greater Tampa Bay for more than 20 years.  Her commitment to BOMA is evident through her election to multiple offices in BOMA/Greater Tampa Bay, in BOMA Florida and three terms to the Board of Directors for the Southern Region.  She is also completing her second term as Vice Co-Chair of BOMA International’s State & Local Government Affairs Committee.  In 2012, Vilmar and her team received the Tampa Bay TOBY Award in the 500,000 to One Million Square Feet category and she was awarded the Property Manager of the Year Award.
