The BOMA Foundation
The mission of the BOMA Foundation is to serve the commercial real estate industry by fostering a future vision, forward thinking research, innovative thought, and global best practices.
The Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) Foundation is an independent, tax-exempt organization (501(c) 3) dedicated to sponsoring and encouraging educational activities, innovative research, and future workforce development to advance the commercial real estate industry and profession into the future. In addition, the Foundation looks to initiate programs that will guide commercial real estate into the next decade, while seeking to enhance the public appreciation of real estate and its significance in society. The Foundation is affiliated with the Building Owners and Managers Association International, the nation's oldest and largest commercial real estate organization.
The Foundation’s future-oriented focus concentrates on such areas as future workforce development and industry diversity, cutting educational and innovative idea development, and energy efficiency and sustainability issues and programs.
Foundation programs are supported through tax deductible gifts and grants from BOMA members, real estate related companies, foundations and trusts, and interested individuals.
The Work of the BOMA Foundation
The BOMA Foundation has been an innovative force throughout much of its history, benefiting the industry and blazing a path to a better future. Its many successful programs include:
J. Michael Coleman Scholarship Fund for Emerging Professionals - In honor of Mike Coleman, who retired in 2016 after more than 30 years with AlliedBarton (now Allied Universal) Security. Mike has touched the lives of every member of BOMA, promoting the highest level of customer service as Vice President of Commercial Real Estate for Allied Universal, and supporting BOMA International and BOMA local associations through sponsorships and leadership. Mike is an active member of BOMA Philadelphia, a BOMA Fellow, and has served on the BOMA Foundation Board and BOMA International Executive Committee.
Two scholarships are available from the J. Michael Coleman Scholarship Fund:
- Annual Conference/Expo Attendance - Awarded to young/emerging professionals to attend BOMA International's Annual Conference & Expo.
- Certified Manager of Commercial Properties (CMCP) - Awarded to an early-career property manager pursuing the CMCP certification

Developing Tomorrow’s Workforce: Supporting REAP – the BOMA Foundation is a major sponsor of the Real Estate Associates Program (REAP), the commercial industry’s leading diversity program bringing the country’s most talented minority professionals into the world of commercial real estate.
Developing Today’s Workforce: New Asset Management Course Development – the Foundation was instrumental in providing needed funding for the development and launch of the Asset Management Course series. Target for commercial real estate course managers with 3-5 years of experience, these courses are designed to help property managers better understand the function of asset management in order to be a more valuable contributor.
The BOMA Energy Efficiency Program (BEEP)— a series of educational programs developed by the Foundation, offering industry practitioners strategies for reducing energy usage and costs in commercial office building. Beep teaches property owners, managers, and operators important strategies for optimizing their equipment, people, and practices.
This innovative, award-winning program has educated nearly 15,000 industry practitioners to date. In partnership with the US Environmental Protection Agency ENERGY STAR® program, BEEP has and will continue to develop industry standards for operational excellence, document success through recognition programs, and communicate those successes to our industry and stakeholders.
Emergency Assistance Needs—The Foundation works to forward disaster relief to local charity organizations in the case of catastrophic events such as 9/11 or Hurricane Katrina.
