(WASHINGTON, D.C. – May 30, 2014) The Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) International, along with the Green Parking Council, the International Facility Management Association and the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Better Buildings Alliance, recently recognized 12 organizations for leading the industry in energy-efficient lighting in parking lots and garages through the Lighting Energy Efficiency in Parking (LEEP) Campaign.  Among the winners were several BOMA International member companies, including MC Realty Group LLC, Regency Centers, JBG Companies, MGM, Kimco, Cox Enterprises and Howard Hughes Corporation.

Parking sites are often overlooked opportunities to save energy and money.  The LEEP Campaign is a recognition and guidance program launched in 2012 to encourage the use of high-efficiency lighting technology in parking facilities.  Its goal is to provide the resources to help property owners and managers evaluate opportunities to upgrade lighting in parking lots and garages through retrofits and in new construction projects.  To date, more than 100 U.S. businesses and organizations representing more than 270 million square feet of parking space nationwide have joined the LEEP Campaign.  Since the program launched, LEEP participants have saved nearly 45 million kilowatt-hours and $4 million annually by upgrading to high-efficiency lighting in more than 500,000 parking spaces.

A complete list of award winners by category can be found on the LEEP Campaign website.

“By making parking lots and garages more energy efficient, our partners in the Lighting Energy Efficiency in Parking Campaign are saving energy, improving their bottom lines and serving as models for other organizations to increase the use of energy efficiency in their communities,” said DOE Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy David Danielson.

“We are pleased to congratulate the organizations honored by the LEEP Campaign, especially the BOMA International member companies,” said BOMA International Chair Rich Greninger, managing director with Carr Properties.  “The efforts of all LEEP Campaign participants demonstrate the importance of energy efficiency in all aspects of commercial real estate and highlight the power of the volunteer marketplace in energy management.”

The LEEP Campaign has been extended for a second year and next year’s awards will be announced at BOMA International’s 2015 Every Building Conference & Expo, which takes place June 28-30, 2015, in Los Angeles.
