U.S. Senate Passes Energy Bill (4/21/2016)

On April 20, the U.S. Senate passed the Energy Policy Modernization Act (S. 2012), a comprehensive energy bill that includes provisions requiring the U.S. Department of Energy to consider a payback period when it advocates for energy codes proposals at the International Code Council (ICC) or ASHRAE. BOMA International strongly supports this provision to consider real-world economic factors when making energy efficiency decisions.

Last year, the U.S. House approved its own energy policy measure, H.R. 8, on December 3 by a vote of 249-174. That measure included similar building efficiency provisions. The bills will now go a conference committee comprised of members of both the House and Senate to reach a deal.
