Real Estate Roundtable Submits Comments on EPA Carbon Rule (12/4/2014)

The Real Estate Roundtable (RER), which brings together leaders of the nation’s top real estate firms with the leaders of national real estate trade associations to jointly address key policy issues, has submitted comments to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regarding its “Clean Power Plan” proposed rule.

RER’s comments reflect the emphasis on environmental stewardship that the real estate industry has undertaken and underscore the importance of governmental policies in overcoming financial and technical barriers to the adoption of climate- and business-friendly solutions. RER highlights the need for the EPA and states to engage tenants alongside building owners and managers to collaborate for energy and greenhouse gas reduction goals though a voluntary “Tenant Star” program; demonstrates the need for EPA and utilities to come together to provide energy usage data to multi-tenant buildings to enable them to benchmark; and encourages the federal government to direct additional resources to improving aging building stock.
