Congress Considers Energy Legislation (7/30/2015)

On July 22, Sens. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) introduced the Energy Policy Modernization Act of 2015. While the legislation comes after months of hearings on the more than 100 energy bills introduced so far by this Congress, the process of creating a much-needed comprehensive, bipartisan energy legislation barely has begun. Two markups of the bill are scheduled for this week alone, which will no doubt begin rounds of continuing negotiations over energy codes language, energy pilot programs, energy and water efficiency in federal buildings and much more.

The U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee also recently released its own comprehensive energy bill, which it held hearings on this week. The committee plans to hold a markup of the full 100-page bill in September when lawmakers have returned from the August recess.

BOMA is working actively with members in both the House and Senate to ensure that the interests of commercial real estate and a market-driven, voluntary approach are kept in mind as the final bills take shape.
