INTERMODAL

Involving two or more different modes of transportation in conveying goods.  Used to denote movements of cargo containers interchangeably between transport modes, i.e. motor, rail, water, and air carriers, and where the equipment is compatible within the multiple systems.

  • A system of transport whereby two or more modes of transport are used to transport the same loading unit or truck in an integrated manner, without loading or unloading, in a transport chain.

  • A system whereby standard-sized cargo containers can be moved seamlessly between different 'modes' of transport, typically on specially adapted ships known as containerships, barges, trucks and trains.
