Commercial Real Estate Industry Comes Out for BOMA Congress and The Office Building Show

More than 4,000 commercial real estate professionals from across the country and internationally gathered in Dallas, Texas, June 24-27, for the BOMA International North American Real Estate Congress® and The Office Building Show. The best and the brightest came out to take part in the industry’s premier educational and networking event.

“The BOMA International North American Real Estate Congress and The Office Building Show is the most important gathering of commercial real estate professionals in the industry,” said BOMA International Chairman David W. Hewett, RPA, CPM, CCIM, FMA, CFM, of Beaverton, Oregon, principal for Trammell Crow Company, Auburn Hills, Michigan.   “The groundbreaking educational sessions, renowned speakers and showcase of cutting edge technology and products made this year’s convention one of the most  successful to date.”

Major Announcements and News

Kurt Padevano and Dave Hewett at Board of Governors Meeting

At the Board of Governors meeting on Sunday, June 25, Kurt R. Padavano, RPA, CPM, FMA, SMA, and chief operating officer of Advance Realty Group, was elected BOMA International Chairman and Chief Elected Officer for 2006-2007. Other officers elected were: Chairman-Elect Brenna Walraven, RPA, CPM, executive director, national property management, USAA Realty Company, BOMA/Orange County; Vice Chairman Richard D. Purtell, RPA, vice president, Andalex Group, BOMA/Greater Cincinnati; and Secretary/Treasurer, David Stucky, building manager and special projects coordinator, City of San Diego, BOMA/San Diego. In other news from the Board of Governors meeting, it was the announced that Buildings Magazine, a publication of Stamats Business Media, and BOMA International have formed an alliance to produce The Office Building Show beginning in 2007. Read the full details.

Significant achievements, as well as upcoming initiatives and partnerships were announced during the Board of Governors meeting, including:

  • The success of the BOMA Energy Efficiency Program (BEEP). Since its kickoff in March, BEEP has reached more than 2,500 students with the launch of its first three of six  seminars.
    BOMA International and BOMA Canada Solidify Relationship
  • A new relationship with BOMA Canada was announced, allowing them to build strength and value in Canada while ensuring continued involvement and participation in BOMA International.
  • The newly released 2006 Experience Exchange Report has data from more than 5,000 buildings and more than 1 billion square feet.
  • The Medical Office Building Seminar, which took place in Dallas prior to the BOMA Congress, enjoyed robust growth this year with over 300 attendees.
  • BOMA welcomed four new supporting partners to date this year, and continues to strengthen relationships with BOMI, IREM Realcomm, CREW, SIOR, NAIOP, CCIM and others.
  • BOMA membership is up 1.8 percent over this time last year.
  • The industry enjoyed crucial advocacy victories in capital gains tax relief, terrorism insurance extensions, energy efficiency tax deductions, and continues to work on the extension of leasehold depreciation and energy efficiency tax benefits, code changes from the NIST report and state and local model code adoption.
  • The Harvard Emerging Leaders Program is a sellout that continues to grow.

During the Town Hall Meeting, the highly anticipated BOMA One Task Force Results were announced by BOMA One Committee Chair David Patton, PEng, RPA, and president of DWP Professional Property Management Services in Ontario, Canada. With a vision of making BOMA the ONE organization building owners and managers and other industry professionals feel they must participate in throughout their careers, the task force defined four major goals that can be incorporated into planning strategies at every level throughout the BOMA Federation. The four goals are:

  1. Strengthened and Better Managed BOMA Brand
  2. Consistent Service Delivery Across All Markets
  3. Enhanced Services and Information Through the BOMA Network
  4. Stronger Relationships

During the Town Hall Meeting, representatives from several  BOMA local associations, including Detroit, Tucson, South Puget Sound, Philadelphia and San Francisco, briefed attendees on how they are already implementing the BOMA One goals into their own business plans.

Information-Packed Sessions

BOMA International Chairman and Chief Elected Officer, David W. Hewett and BOMA President and CEO Henry Chamberlain gave attendees a snapshot of the state of the commercial real estate industry during the BOMA and Realcomm Joint General Session Monday morning. Hewett told attendees that the state of the industry can be summarized by “consolidation, globalization, staying focused on expenses and using ‘green’ products and programs to move into the technology of the future.”

Also at the Monday general session, attendees received the latest hi tech insights on “Making Connections” @ the Intersection of Real Estate and Technology. Keynoters included Rich Karlgaard, publisher of Forbes and author of the book, Life 2.0, John Hanke, founder and general manager of Google Earth, Michael Joroff, professor of urban studies and planning at MIT, Andy Florance, president and CEO of  CoStar Group, and Diane Paddison, COO Global Services of Trammell Crow Company.

During the Asset Management Lunch on Monday, Jack Minter, national director of investment services with Trammell Crow Company, gave attendees an update on Capital Markets, reporting on everything from the vacancy and rental rates to cap rates and sales volume to the coastal distribution of commercial real estate investment.

World Class Speakers

Malcolm Gladwell, author of New York Times #1 bestseller, Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking, packed the house during the Sunday afternoon general session. Gladwell told attendees that good judgment is crucial to succeed in changing environments and often based on “respecting the power of instinct.”

At the Tuesday morning general session, Richard Florida, best-selling author of Rise of the Creative Class, spoke to delegates about how creativity is the new force driving the economy and how businesses can face global economic competition by tapping into the pool of talent in the growing megalopolises or “creative societies.”
