Green Buildings/Sustainability

BOMA International Position

BOMA International encourages real estate owners and managers to continue to expand their active role in implementing responsible consumption practices that are environmentally and economically sustainable utilizing proven technologies and procedures.

BOMA International opposes any federal, state or local government mandates requiring green building compliance in the private sector without providing corresponding and commensurate incentives to owners.  Laws and regulations designed to improve sustainability and energy efficiency, if needed, should be written into building codes and developed through the established industry codes and standards consensus processes.

Background

Real estate management teams, in conjunction with building occupants, can have a positive impact on the environment through a strong commitment to implement current government programs; manage hazardous waste and environmental risks; establish emergency response, recycling, water and energy conservation plans; ensure healthy indoor air quality; implement “green” purchasing practices; and encourage public transportation and carpooling programs. Building owners and managers have a social responsibility to utilize “green” technologies where proven to increase building efficiency and that provide a positive return on investment (ROI).  

The role of BOMA International in the green buildings arena is evolving. BOMA must lead the real estate industry:

  • In educating our membership on green buildings and the various programs and technologies available for achieving an environmentally responsible building;
  • In providing all information available to our members so they can make decisions that best reflect their needs and the marketplace within which they operate;
  • In monitoring and advocating in the legislative, regulatory and codes arena for the ability of BOMA members to continue to make the choices that work best for their buildings and tenants; and
  • In promoting environmental stewardship and recognizing excellence.
