Commercial Real Estate Industry Comes Out for BOMA International Congress and The Office Building Show

(WASHINGTON, DC—June 30, 2006)  More than 4,000 commercial real estate professionals from across the country and internationally gathered in Dallas, Texas, June 24-27, for the BOMA International North America Real Estate Congress® and The Office Building Show. The best and the brightest came out to take part in the industry’s premier educational and networking event.

“The BOMA International North American Real Estate Congress and The Office Building Show is the most important gathering of commercial real estate professionals in the industry,” said BOMA International Chairman, David W. Hewett, RPA, CPM, CCIM, FMA, CFM, principal for Trammell Crow Company, Auburn Hills, Michigan. “The groundbreaking educational sessions, renowned speakers and showcase of cutting edge technology and products made this year’s convention one of the best attended and most successful to date.”
Highlights include:

  • At the Board of Governors meeting on Sunday, June 25, Kurt R. Padavano, RPA, CPM, FMA, SMA, and chief operating officer of Advance Realty Group, was elected BOMA International Chairman and Chief Elected Officer for 2006-2007. Read more about the new BOMA officers.

  • In other news from the Board of Governors meeting, it was the announced that Buildings Magazine, a publication of Stamats Business Media, and BOMA International have formed an alliance to produce The Office Building Show beginning in 2007. Read the full details.

  • The 2006 Experience Exchange Report was released, with data from more than 5,000 buildings and more than 1 billion square feet. Read More.

  • During the BOMA and Realcomm Joint General Session Monday morning. BOMA International Chairman and Chief Elected Officer, David W. Hewett told attendees that the state of the industry can be summarized by “consolidation, globalization, staying focused on expenses and using ‘green’ products and programs to move into the technology of the future.”

  • Also at the Monday general session, attendees received the latest hi tech insights on “Making Connections” @ the Intersection of Real Estate and Technology. Keynoters included Rich Karlgaard, publisher of Forbes and author of the book, Life 2.0, John Hanke, founder and general manager of Google Earth, Michael Joroff, professor of urban studies and planning at MIT, Andy Florance, president and CEO of  CoStar Group, and Diane Paddison, COO Global Services of Trammel Crow Company.

  • Malcolm Gladwell, author of New York Times #1 bestseller, Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking, packed the house during the Sunday afternoon general session. Gladwell told attendees that good judgment is crucial to succeed in changing environments and often based on “respecting the power of instinct.”

  • At the Tuesday morning general session, Richard Florida, best-selling author of Rise of the Creative Class, spoke to delegates about how creativity is the new force driving the economy and how businesses can face global economic competition by tapping into the pool of talent in the growing megalopolises or “creative societies.”

  • A highlight from The Office Building Show was the popular BOMA Green Pavilion and ENERGY STAR®  Showcase where leading companies showed that it’s “easy being green” by exhibiting the latest in environmentally friendly and energy efficient products. 

  • The most anticipated social event of the commercial real estate industry, the Office Building of the Year (TOBY) and Earth Awards Reception and Banquet, was held Tuesday evening in Dallas, Texas. The grand finale of the The BOMA Congress and The Office Building Show, this prestigious program honored outstanding performance in building operations in ten distinct categories.
