Lessons Learned from Hurricane Katrina

BOMA International Presents Audio Seminar on Implementing a Shelter-in-Place Program

In the aftermath of the recent terror attacks in London and Hurricane Katrina along the Gulf Coast, shelter-in-place programs have become more important than ever for commercial buildings. Shelter-in-place programs allow building occupants to remain inside a building for increased safety and security for a given period of time and where ingress and egress is controlled. The Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) International will present the audio seminar “Preparing Buildings for Sheltering in Place,” on Wednesday, October 12, 2005, from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. EST.

The audio seminar will outline the key components of a shelter-in-place plan for commercial real estate and share lessons learned from property managers who established extended shelters following Hurricane Katrina. The seminar will address:

  • Essential elements and key components of a shelter in place plan;
  • Lessons learned from property managers and other commercial real estate professionals who have had to put a shelter in place plan together on the scene in response to Hurricane Katrina;
  • Coordinating shelter in place plans with other building emergency planning, including training tenants and occupants;
  • Communications planning for sheltering in place;
  • Best practices from those who have implemented shelter in place plans, including planning for extended shelter periods; and
  • Insights about testing shelter in place plans, including how those plans worked and how they’ll be improved in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

The seminar is available anywhere that is equipped with a telephone and/or Internet connection. Participants can call in from a home, office or conference room. One low fee allows for training of multiple employees from the same telephone or Internet connection.

Content for the seminar is designed for building/property owners, brokers, leasing agents, corporate counsel, property managers, asset managers, facility and corporate facility managers, vendors and suppliers to the commercial real estate industry.

To register, go to www.boma.org/TrainingAndEducation/LearnByPhone or call (800) 775-7654. Registration fees for BOMA members are $195 USD per site, per seminar. Nonmember fees are $245 USD per site, per seminar.
